Common Cold & Flu Care: 5 Tips for Supporting Your Child

Cold & Flu

If you’re a parent during the cold season, that can mean sleepless nights caring for a sick little one.

When your child comes down with the common cold or flu, you want to do everything you can to relieve their symptoms and help them recover quickly. The good news is you can care for your child at home in several effective ways, this may include opting for an elderberry syrup, like Sambucol, which can help shorten the duration of the common cold and relieve symptoms.

1. Offer Plenty of Fluids

To help your child recover from a cold or the flu, hydration is key. In fact, drinking plenty of fluids helps loosen congestion and replenish nutrients.

Offer your child water, juice, and clear broths. Aim for 185ml-250ml of fluid per hour to prevent dehydration.

2. Clear Up Stuffed Nasal Passages

Keeping your child’s nasal passages clear and moistened will help relieve their stuffy nose and make them more comfortable.

For toddlers and older kids, a cool mist humidifier in their room at night can also help relieve nasal dryness and irritation. The humid environment can help your child breathe easier and sleep more comfortably through the night.

3. Let Them Rest

According to studies, sleep deprivation can impact the immune system, which has the potential to make your child more susceptible to the common cold.

Aim for 10-12 hours of sleep per night for school-age children. Naps can also help, especially for younger kids. Keep your child home from school or daycare so they can rest and limit physical activities.

Remember, the body does most of its healing and recovery during sleep. Additional rest will help your child get back to normal activities sooner.

4. Provide a Balanced Diet

When your child is sick, their body’s immune system is already working overtime to fight off the illness. A balanced diet gives their body the fuel to function optimally and combat the cold or flu virus.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which can help boost your child’s immune system. These nutrients strengthen the body’s defence mechanisms and make it more resilient to infections.

Aside from that, whole grains, such as oats, brown rice, and whole wheat bread, are a great energy source and fibre. Fibre not only aids digestion but also supports the gut microbiota, which plays an important role in immune system regulation.

5. Loosen the Cough

When children have a common cold or flu, they often experience coughing as one of the main symptoms. Coughing can be quite bothersome for young ones, causing discomfort and interrupting their sleep and daily activities.

When children cough, their body’s natural defense mechanism attempts to expel mucus from the respiratory system. By working to loosen the cough, you can help your child expel the excess mucus more effectively, allowing their body to heal faster.

On top of that, loosening the cough can also be beneficial because it helps soothe irritated airways. The respiratory system becomes inflamed during flu or cold, leading to coughing fits and discomfort.

Prioritise Your Child’s Health Today

As a parent, your child’s health and well-being is your top priority. Remember that it’s important to monitor symptoms closely and take them to their doctor immediately if their condition worsens or lasts for days.
